Game Fish Stocking - Lake Management
Northern Pike
Big, Bad, Pike
They're called Water Wolves; voracious
predators with mouths full of teeth that eat bass, trout, perch, sunfish,
ducklings, and each other. All fish are predators, but northern pike come
dressed for the part: needle like teeth, vacant eyes, serpentine shape. Their
primeval morphology has changed little in 60 million years. Pike belong to the
northern wilderness, where they remain most common. But stocking has extended
their range south.
Given the proper habitat, northern pike can reproduce in
Illinois. In general, ponds do not provide this habitat. They should be stocked
only in larger ponds and lakes that can support a top predator. Stocking rates
are 5-10 per acre. Available only during the Fall harvest season.
